Finally cooler weather!!
October is a great month to get the kids out there and trout fish. The trout are moving into the interior lakes in large numbers, they are chasing shrimp, and the birds are diving on those shrimp which makes it very easy to locate the trout. If there is a downfall to October fishing it is the size of the trout. You will have a lot of undersized trout especially under the birds but you can catch hundreds of fish in a day which makes for great fun.
If you’re not chasing birds then focus on your favorite reefs and points in Sister Lake, Lake Mechant, and Lost Lake. The key to being successful is to be mobile, whatever you do, don’t stay in one spot if you’re not catching.
I find using a cork with a 2ft leader with a Shrimp Creole Matrix Shad on a 1/4oz Golden Eye jig head is the most productive during October. I’d also have a double rig with Shrimp Creole Matrix on them for when you are fishing the birds.
The reds are moving out of the deep bayous and roaming the duck ponds and the edges of the interior lakes. They will eat just about anything in front of them so pick your favorite bait whether it is a gold spoon, spinnerbait, or a straight plastic on a 1/4oz jig head.
